ABOUT US

 We recognize the need to demonstrate to the generations of today and tomorrow, the characteristics of resilliance and determination that exemplify the experiences of our African American ancestors. As a people, we have survived slavery, segregation, systemic racism, Jim Crow, lynching, police brutality, inferior education, poverty, and ridicule. 

Due to, and in spite of, our circumstances, our people maintain a cadre of stories exemplifying the strength of our resolve and our inate ability to excel. It is our belief that the depth and significance of our past will be lost if our stories are not only collected and archived, and also, retold, with both humility and pride. 

In addition, the significant contributions to the growth and development of the United States by African Americans is missing from the existing curriculum in public education. It is our intention to fill that void with a comprehensive, living document that will inform and inspire.

We are mindful that our families made a concerted effort to make certain that our lives and experiences were better than theirs. We are humbled by their struggle and feel compelled to pay tribute to our rich history by the creation of Our Griot.
